The largest third stage of establishment of Public Internet Access Points (PIAPs) in Lithuania was finished in August. The project “Development of Rural Internet Access Points Network” was implemented during the year 2006-2008 by the Ministry of Interior of the Republic of Lithuania and financed by European Union Structural Funds.
The project was aimed to establishment of 400 new PIAPs in rural areas. As a result Lithuania became one of the European countries having the widest network of public internet access, available to its citizens.
Today PIAP in Lithuania is not only a place to get free access to the internet, but also the centre of local community and education with the possibility to use e-services. PIAP has become one of the means reducing social and geographical exclusion of the country.
Association Langas į ateitį together with the partners UAB S4ID and Kaunas University of Technology participated in the implementation process of the project providing administration, technical support and publicity services.
