Association Langas į ateitį has received a special award from the European Commission for its innovative use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to increase computer literacy of Lithuanian society.

Established by the European Commission, the 2008 European e-Inclusion Awards nominate the best and most imaginative uses of Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

Seven categories of the European e-Inclusion Awards received more than 469 entries with participation of different organizations (public and private companies, communities) from every European Union country. Association Langas į ateitį was one of just 35 shortlisted entries that impressed the judging panel of the 2008 European e-Inclusion Awards and also was announced as an overall winner in Digital Literacy category.

Association Langas į ateitį is awarded for the results of the project “Computer Literacy Basics for a Lithuanian e-Citizen”. For more than two years Association Langas į ateitį has been implementing this project, financed by European Union structural funds, during which basics of computer, internet and e-services usage were provided to more than 50.000 Lithuanian citizens.

“It is the first time when Lithuanian organization gets such a high level award. There are only a few finalists from newly accepted EU countries, so the name of Lithuania, mentioned among the most modern projects, gives us an opportunity once again to enjoy our activity results and international recognition” – says Loreta Krizinauskiene, managing director of Association Langas į ateitį.

As a medallist in the digital literacy category, Association Langas į ateitį has been invited to exhibit at the e-Inclusion Ministerial Conference and Exhibition in Vienna from November 30 to December 2, 2008.

Established by the European Commission, the 2008 European e-Inclusion Awards celebrate the best and most imaginative uses of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). Through the Awards, the Commission aims to inspire industry, governments and other organisations to better exploit the potential of technology to reduce social and digital exclusion.

Despite society’s increasing dependence on digital technology, an estimated one in three Europeans fails to participate or benefit from the information society. Overcoming digital exclusion is not only a social necessity. It will be worth billions to European companies and governments over the next five years.
